MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS
FOR THE FIRST WORLD DAY FOR
GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY

Dear Grandparents, Dear Elderly Friends,

“I am with you always” (Mt 28:20): this is the promise the Lord made to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. They are the words that he repeats to you today, dear grandfathers and grandmothers, dear elderly friends. “I am with you always” are also the words that I, as Bishop of Rome and an elderly person like yourselves, would like to address to you on this first World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly. The whole Church is close to you, to us, and cares about you, loves you and does not want to leave you alone!

I am well aware that this message comes to you at a difficult time: the pandemic swept down on us like an unexpected and furious storm; it has been a time of trial for everyone, but especially for us elderly persons. Many of us fell ill, others died or experienced the death of spouses or loved ones, while others found themselves isolated and alone for long periods.

Even at the darkest moments, as in these months of pandemic, the Lord continues to send angels to console our loneliness and to remind us: “I am with you always”. May every grandfather, every grandmother, every older person, especially those among us who are most alone, receive the visit of an angel!

At times those angels will have the face of our grandchildren, at others, the face of family members, lifelong friends or those we have come to know during these trying times, when we have learned how important hugs and visits are for each of us.

Think about this: what is our vocation today, at our age? To preserve our roots, to pass on the faith to the young and to care for the little ones. Never forget this.

It makes no difference how old you are, whether you still work or not, whether you are alone or have a family, whether you became a grandmother or grandfather at a young age or later, whether you are still independent or need assistance. Because there is no retirement age from the work of proclaiming the Gospel and handing down traditions to your grandchildren.

I ask the Lord that all of us may open our hearts in sensitivity to the sufferings of the poor and intercede for their needs. May each of us learn to repeat to all, and especially to the young, the words of consolation we have heard spoken to us today: “I am with you always”! Keep moving forward! May the Lord grant you his blessing.

MENSAJE DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO CON OCASIÓN DE LA PRIMERA JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LOS ABUELOS Y DE LOS MAYORES

Queridos abuelos, queridas abuelas:

“Yo estoy contigo todos los días” (cf. Mt 28,20) es la promesa que el Señor hizo a sus discípulos antes de subir al cielo y que hoy te repite también a ti, querido abuelo y querida abuela. A ti. “Yo estoy contigo todos los días” son también las palabras que como Obispo de Roma y como anciano igual que tú me gustaría dirigirte con motivo de esta primera Jornada Mundial de los Abuelos y de las Personas Mayores. Toda la Iglesia está junto a ti —digamos mejor, está junto a nosotros—, ¡se preocupa por ti, te quiere y no quiere dejarte solo!

Soy muy consciente de que este mensaje te llega en un momento difícil: la pandemia ha sido una tormenta inesperada y violenta, una dura prueba que ha golpeado la vida de todos, pero que a nosotros mayores nos ha reservado un trato especial, un trato más duro. Muchos de nosotros se han enfermado, y tantos se han ido o han visto apagarse la vida de sus cónyuges o de sus seres queridos. Muchos, aislados, han sufrido la soledad durante largo tiempo.

Pero incluso cuando todo parece oscuro, como en estos meses de pandemia, el Señor sigue enviando ángeles para consolar nuestra soledad y repetirnos: “Yo estoy contigo todos los días". Que cada abuelo, cada anciano, cada abuela, cada persona mayor —sobre todo los que están más solos— reciba la visita de un ángel!

A veces tendrán el rostro de nuestros nietos, otras veces el rostro de familiares, de amigos de toda la vida o de personas que hemos conocido durante este momento difícil. En este tiempo hemos aprendido a comprender lo importante que son los abrazos y las visitas para cada uno de nosotros.

Escuchen bien: ¿cuál es nuestra vocación hoy, a nuestra edad? Custodiar las raíces, transmitir la fe a los jóvenes y cuidar de los pequeños. No lo olviden.

No importa la edad que tengas, si sigues trabajando o no, si estás solo o tienes una familia, si te convertiste en abuela o abuelo de joven o de mayor, si sigues siendo independiente o necesitas ayuda, porque no hay edad en la que puedas retirarte de la tarea de anunciar el Evangelio, de la tarea de transmitir las tradiciones a los nietos.

Pido al Señor que cada uno de nosotros ensanche su corazón y lo haga sensible a los sufrimientos de los más pequeños, y capaz de interceder por ellos. Que cada uno de nosotros aprenda a repetir a todos, y especialmente a los más jóvenes, esas palabras de consuelo que hoy hemos oído dirigidas a nosotros: “Yo estoy contigo todos los días”. Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I want to thank you for your warm welcoming, for your presence at Saint Stan’s, for your faith and generosity towards your parish.

I know that you have been going through the Renew my Church process and are aware that we are now discerning our future with St Damian Parish in Oak Forest and Saint Christopher Parish in Midlothian. Meetings will start after Labor Day. Let us continue to ask the Lord to send his Holy Spirit upon all of us, so we can discover how St. Stan’s and our sister parishes can work together to advance the salvation of souls and the service to our faith communities.

The first weeks of my presence here at St. Stan’s have been dedicated to learning about you, your history, your hopes and dreams, the difficult moments you have gone through, but also the blessings and highest points of your long time as a community of faith. I have noticed the great love you have for your parish and I share in that love and hope.

In the past weeks, I have met with several leaders of the different groups, teams, and ministries at St. Stan’s. We are going to restart the meetings for the parish council and the finance council. I will let you know soon who the members of these two leadership councils in our parish are. I also want to invite all the different ministries at our parish to continue their mission: altar servers, lectors, eucharistic ministers, choirs, prayer groups, Knights of Columbus, ushers, sacristans, social services, Pro Labore Dei, catechists, bereavement ministers, Jornadas, ministers of care, etc.

It is also the moment to begin the preparation of the several activities that St. Stan’s hosts in the Fall and Winter, such as the parish festival in September and our Lady of Guadalupe in December. We are also working on welcoming the children and young people who are going to begin or continue their formation to receive the sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation.

I invite all of you to consider joining our parish ministries. Let us collaborate and make our parish a vibrant community where people are involved because they truly belong. And let us welcome all those who visit us with the same warm welcoming you received me. Let us offer them a smile, a word of hope, a blessing, the same blessing that the Lord is giving us.

Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Quiero agradecerles por su cálida bienvenida, por su presencia en San Stanislaus, por su fe y generosidad hacia su parroquia.

Sé que han estado pasando por el proceso de Renovar mi Iglesia y están conscientes de que ahora estamos discerniendo nuestro futuro con la Parroquia de San Damián en Oak Forest y San Cristóbal en Midlothian. Las reuniones comenzarán después del Día del Trabajo. Continuemos pidiéndole al Señor que envíe su Espíritu Santo sobre todos nosotros, para que podamos descubrir cómo St. Stan y nuestras parroquias hermanas pueden trabajar juntas para promover la salvación de las almas y el servicio a nuestras comunidades de fe.

Las primeras semanas de mi presencia aquí las he dedicado a aprender sobre ustedes, su historia, sus esperanzas y sueños, los momentos difíciles por los que han pasado, pero también las bendiciones y los puntos más altos de su largo tiempo como comunidad de fe. He notado el gran amor que tienen por su parroquia y comparto ese amor y esperanza.

En las últimas semanas, me he reunido con varios líderes de diferentes grupos, equipos y ministerios en St. Stan. Vamos a reiniciar las reuniones del consejo parroquial y del consejo de finanzas. Pronto les haré saber quiénes son los miembros de estos dos consejos de liderazgo en nuestra parroquia. También quiero invitar a todos los diferentes ministerios de nuestra parroquia a continuar su misión: monaguillos, lectores, ministros eucarísticos, coros, grupos de oración, Caballeros de Colón, ujieres, sacristanes, servicios sociales, Pro Labore Dei, catequistas, ministros de duelo, Jornadas, ministros de cuidados, etc.

También es el momento de comenzar la preparación de las diversas actividades que St. Stan's organiza en otoño e invierno, como el festival parroquial en Septiembre y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Diciembre. También estamos trabajando para recibir a los niños y jóvenes que van a iniciar o continuar su formación para recibir los sacramentos de la Eucaristía y la Confirmación.

Los invito a todos a considerar unirse a nuestros ministerios parroquiales. Colaboremos y hagamos de nuestra parroquia una comunidad vibrante donde las personas se involucren porque realmente pertenecen. Y demos la bienvenida a todos los que nos visitan con la misma cálida bienvenida que me recibieron. Ofrezcámosles una sonrisa, una palabra de esperanza, una bendición, la misma bendición que el Señor nos está dando.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am very excited to begin this journey with all of you. Allow me to tell you a little about me.

I was born in a small village in Colombia on Jan. 19, 1991. Since my early years, I felt in my heart a desire to become a priest. When I was seven years old, I received my first communion and told my parents about this calling. My parents, Roberto and Julieta, supported me from the beginning. When my family moved to the capital city, Bogota, I joined the altar servers ministry at St. Marceline Champagnat parish.

In 2008, I created the parish website, an online radio station, and the parish bulletin. In 2009, I entered the Major Seminary of Bogota, where I studied philosophy. In 2011, I created Red of Seminarians, an online platform that shares information from seminaries around the world. In 2012, I worked as a high school teacher in a private school in Bogota, teaching philosophy, religion, ethics, and human rights.

In 2013, I moved to Chicago and studied English for a year at UIC. I began theology studies at Mundelein Seminary in 2014, and in May 2018 I graduated with a Master of Divinity and a Bachelor in Sacred Theology, S.T.B.

I was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 19, 2018, and was assigned as an associate pastor at St. Joseph, Libertyville. Cardinal Cupich now has assigned me as administrator of St. Stanislaus.

Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Estoy muy emocionado de comenzar este viaje con todos ustedes. Les contarte un poco sobre mí.

Nací en un pequeño pueblo de Colombia el 19 de Enero de 1991. Desde mis primeros años, sentí en mi corazón el deseo de ser sacerdote. Cuando tenía siete años, recibí mi primera comunión y les conté a mis padres sobre este llamado. Mis padres, Roberto y Julieta, me apoyaron desde el principio. Cuando mi familia se mudó a la capital, Bogotá, me uní al ministerio de monaguillos en la parroquia St. Marceline Champagnat.

En el 2008, creé el sitio web de la parroquia, una estación de radio en línea y el boletín parroquial. En el 2009 ingresé al Seminario Mayor de Bogotá, donde estudié Filosofía. En el 2011, creé Red de Seminaristas, una plataforma en línea que comparte información de seminarios de todo el mundo. En el 2012, trabajé como maestro de secundaria en una escuela privada en Bogotá, enseñando filosofía, religión, ética y derechos humanos.

En el 2013, me mudé a Chicago y estudié inglés un año en UIC. Comencé los estudios de teología en el Seminario Mundelein en el 2014, y en Mayo del 2018 me gradué con una Maestría en Divinidad y una Licenciatura en Teología Sagrada, S.T.B.

Fui ordenado sacerdote de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago el 19 de Mayo del 2018 y fui asignado como pastor asociado en St. Joseph, Libertyville. El Cardenal Cupich ahora me ha asignado como administrador de San Stanislaus.
